Log:

Infernus, Gutboy, Arborlore, and Dominus have just finished resting for the night when animated corpses of the goblins they had dispatched earlier start pouring from the lair. As the goblin zombies start advancing on the heroes' position they start attacking the undead beasts. In the morning mists, they make out some live orcs escaping to the Southeast. One of the orcs carries a fancy pouch with Sir Trefrey's insignia on it. The heroes manage to destroy the goblin zombies with little trouble. They heal their wounds and decide to explore the lair.

Inside the lair, they meet no resistance. However, they happen on a throne room of the orc and goblin fighters. The contents of the throne room suggest that the leader of the orcs and goblins was a cleric necromancer of the foulest order. They also find two potions. One of endurance, and one of bull's strength. In another room, they happen upon some other treasure including a suit of dwarven half-plate armor, some chips of obsidian, and some silver pieces minted in Venkmar. The four heroes return to Fort Trefrey.

At the fort, Tordek listens as the four heroes tell their leader what they have seen. Tordek explains that the pack with Trefrey's crest on it belonged to him and that he wore the artifact on his person most of the time before he was killed in the raid. Tordek selects the four sneakiest heroes he can muster: Arborlore, Gutboy, Pishogue, and Tenacious to follow the orcs' tracks back to the main army that sacked Fort Trefrey and to report back on the army's strength and whereabouts.

The new band of four heroes follow the tracks South along the Goblinwater river into the swamp known only as the Tale O'Nine. There they happen upon two orc guards who the heroes dispatch, but not before one of them raises an alarm. Luckily, the companions are able to hide from the powerful band of ogres, orcs, and goblins that arrive to inspect the alarm. The heroes then follow the tracks of those humanoids back to the main body of the army.

A full seventy-five goblins, twenty-five orcs, and ten ogres made up the body of the force commanded by a tremendous stone giant. As the four companions watched from their hiding place, the giant accepted Trefrey's bag from the escaped orc necromancer. "Before the master gets the deck," the giant bellows, "I want to have some of the power of the deck for myself". The surrounding hordes gasp in horror as the giant declares that he wants to draw a single card. He reaches into the bag. The giant pulls a card out, looks at it, and screams in horror and frustration. The card has a devil on it. A devil that looks just like the one on the card appears, and a battle ensues between the giant and the beast. The army scatters in fear, and the forgotten bag is snatched up by a passing goblin. The devil eventually bests the giant, and then disappears itself. The companions shake their heads in unbelief and return to the fort to make a report to Tordek on what they have seen.
