Kronin comes from the Shieldstone family of Clan Holderhek, a proud and wealthy noble clan of mountain dwarves related to the royal clan (Rumnaheim) and once highly respected in the underground fortresses of the Dwarf Kingdom. Kronin's great-grandfather, a paladin named Dorin, took as his wife a hill dwarf warrior-maiden named Haela who saved his life in a pitched battle. None in the clan could dissuade him from this, and Haela was eventually ennobled, but the political damage was done. Since Dorin's passing, the clan's holding's have dwindled by nearly a third and their private standing has slipped dramatically (but not public standing, thanks to the king). Kronin's family arranged a marriage between him and a young maiden of another noble clan to take place after his 60th birthday. One day, he sneaked into her family's dwelling to see her surreptitiously and overheard a conversation between her and her mother where he and his clan were described as "grubby hill dwarves but RICH grubby hill dwarves who are blood relatives to the king". Further listening revealed that the marriage was agreed to by them solely so that they could wheedle their way into partial ownership in the Holderhek clan's mines. Barely able to contain his anger, Kronin went back to his home and told his father what he had heard and was scolded for his behavior and told, much to his dismay, that the wedding would proceed as planned. "She can think what she wants for now, she'll get over it eventually and so will you!" his father said. Kronin went to his chambers and sulked and then remembered the stories his father had told him as a child. A century ago, Kronin's father, Delnar, and uncle, Dilgar, (his elder twin) had a fierce argument that resulted in Delnar leaving and being a mercenary in the Empire's Northern Marches for nearly a decade and amassed quite a fortune both in wealth and experiences. Kronin then decided to follow in his footsteps. He left a note for his family and equipped himself as a common soldier and left with a trade caravan the next morning. And the rest, as they say, is history. Significant family members:
