Gex is a human monk, reincarnated by the might of the Old Gods to delve into the Nine Hells and recover one of the few keys to free the Demiurge. During that fateful mission, Gex (who had always been a gremlin, hoarding trinkets and buttons during their lifetime) swallowed the key and sent the rest of the crusaders back to the mortal realm, stranding them and the powerful artifact in Stygia.
