+**Motivation**: A lifetime living in the slums of Gotham has given Maria a first-hand view of the filthy underbelly of Gotham.  The vulnerable are traded and consumed like any other commodity, with little regard for the humanity of those crushed underfoot.  Despite having a name that suggests privilege, Maria rose from humble origins where to a station where she would do anything to make sure that these children are never harmed again.  Once Mr. Cheavers offered her the resources to make that happen, she jumped at the opportunity and she's been working for him ever since.
