Serina studied the raising of the dead in college and met the Giovanni that way. While founding her relationship with the family, primarily by loving their well known kindred Rodolfo Giovanni, she found herself an enjoyed addition to the atmosphere of the home they opened to her freely. But even their affections couldn't protect her form her chosen studies and the dangers it presented. She had managed a meeting with the Arch Bishop Emilio DeVega, thinking nothing of the token Rodolfo gave her upon her departure dangling from her neck. She didn't know at the time, but the symbol was of the Giovanni. In an attempt on her believed immortality or posession the enraged bishop assaulted her with the sharps edges of a crucifix, leaving her covered in scars and permanently reviled by the church. She shares their fear and hatred to this day.
