In the spring of 577 it was upgraded with several stone buildings and a stone tower on an earthen motte.
+The castle was attacked by bugbears and giants in July 577, leading to the destruction of all the wooden buildings and the loss of 12 mercenary crossbowmen, and the stone barn and many horses.  A temporary wooden barn was hastily built to hold new horses.  The stone bunkhouse was gallantly held by 12 mercenary spearmen and the tower was never breached.  The invaders were all destroyed.
