If a character has proper tools, skill and time, he can create ordinary items for himself. This is rarely profitable for low-cost items, since the profit is small and not geared to PC-level of personal spending. To determine the crafting details, look at the list price of the item. The item will take 2 days of work for each gold piece of cost, and you must spend 40% of the cost on materials. For items made of silver or gold, calculate the time as if it were a normal item, but multiple the cost of materials by 10 for silver and 100 for gold. Silver weapons are restricted to the items given in the gear list and use the indicated costs for calculation.

• Example: An Arming Sword costs 15gp. If the PC has Craft (Swordsmith) skill and a smithy, it will take him 30 days and 6gp to make it. If he has an apprentice, he can cut the time in half (but needs to pay the apprentice).
• Example: A hand bell costs 10gp. If the PC has Craft (Goldsmith) and craftman's tools, it will take him 20 days to make one and it will cost 4gp. If however, he makes it of gold, it will still take 20 days, but will cost 400gp in materials.

Masterwork items are items of exception quality. Each one costs 10 times the price of an ordinary item. A masterwork item has its durability increased by 1 compared with an ordinary example. Only masterwork items can be made into magic items.

An Ulfberht Sword is a special masterwork weapon made of high quality steel by a guild of Frankish smiths .and much prized through the Northlands, Ulfberht swords have very high durability and inflict one extra point of damage.

Background Calculus: For each gold piece of cost, figure 3sp goes to labor, 3 sp to profit or capital, and 4sp to materials. The PC crafter must pay the material cost. Since 3sp is about 2 day's living expenses for a normal NPC, each Gold Piece of cost takes 2 man/days of work.
