blackangel

Blackangel

This busy port was settled by orcs long ago during the period of the Verdant Empire, growing in economic importance over time as a trade and manufacturing hub. It is now the home to several colleges of magic and lore, laboratories, libraries and higher institutions of study as well as a number of institutions devoted to the arts.

Blackangel exports several important goods. Citrus and vegetables from the nearby farms are shipped throughout the area. Blackangel has had a strong shipbuilding tradition that has faded as carpenters have had to go farther east into the Stony Mountains for good timber. Iron and copper mines in the Stony Mountains are now more important materials from the area. There is a lot of manufacturing done here as well, and those goods are shipped to several ports across the Serene Expanse.

The city got its name from a legend that the original settlers of this area were saved from an attack by a giant sea squid by an angel with wings as dark as coal.

City and Neighborhood Map

City Neighborhoods

  • Tower District - The tower of justice is the base of operations of the town guard as well as administrative and judicial center for the city. It is shaded by the gigantic Tower of Justice which serves as the city guard's headquarters as well as the judicial center for the entire area every two weeks.
  • Temple District - This is where all the religious parts of the city are held, including the statue of the black angel that fought off the marauding lizardfolk hordes that gives the city its name. Temples here include a large and hearty church of Ioun the goddess of magic and knowledge, a small yet tasteful shrine to Aurora and a gaudy tabernacle in praise of Erathis the deity of civilization.
  • College Hill - This neighborhood holds all the schools and libraries of learning such as the Arcane Academy.
  • Tern Hill - This hill by the water is dominated by the tower of the Blackangel lighthouse, a structure carved to look like a curling sea squid, with the beacon at its head. The neighborhood around the hill is industrial in nature. The concentric ringing streets surrounding the lighthouse each have a guild associated with them such as carpenters, masons, wheelwrights, chandlers, smiths, and upholsteriers.
  • Hollywind Hill - This area affords a beautiful view of the rest of the city including the docks. It is an exclusive area with its own guards meant for only the wealthiest of the people of Blackangel.
  • Glendale - This residential section is home to the newly rich, including the new merchant class that has made Blackangel the trading hub that it is. Here is where the finer clothiers are located and the seat of the cobblers, clothworkers, and tailors guilds.
  • Theatre District - This district includes amusements of all kinds, and not just theatres. There are dance halls, brothels, gladiator pits, and even a few low stakes games of chance can be found in this area. Although it is clean and seems safe from the side of patrons, it harbors a darker lifestyle behind the scenes. This district is the home of bardic colleges including the Fool's Echo Bardic College.
  • Beverage Hill - Named for all the taverns and inns that serve Blackangel Beer, a bitter brew that includes more hops than usual as well as an assortment of fine wines from the hills to the North. Here, folks can also find guilds dedicated to making food and drink such as bakeries, breweries, butchers, fishmongers, poulters, vintners, and weavers.
  • Vin - This wealthy residential area includes a series of canals and caters to high elf expatriates who make Blackangel their home. This area is patrolled regularly by well-trained ogre guards absolutely dedicated to their elven masters.
  • Monika Beach - A beach for the wealthy to see others and be seen.
  • Mansat Beach - This area is a rocky wasteland used for the more disgusting industries such as slaughtering and tanning skins.
  • Torrank - This lower-class residential area houses all those who work in the industrial neighborhoods of Mansat Beach, Tern Hill, and Long beach.
  • “The Empire” - This orcish slum is mockingly named “The Empire” as a reference to the once proud Verdant Empire that once ruled Blackangel.
  • Littleton - This ethnic enclave of gnomes and halflings features buildings that cater to the diminutive folk and their tastes.
  • Long Beach - Once the site of the ship-building power of Blackangel, this industry has moved elsewhere because timber has been harvested far to the North. Now, Long beach is the site of the docks and shipping that goes on in Blackangel.

Outside the Walls

  • Moonpark - This settlement of farmers all follow Ioun.
  • Thousand Oaks - The village of Thousand Oaks serves farming ventures to the North as well as the wealthy villas along The Palisades to the South. It is the home of many middle-class working families.
  • The Palisades - The wealthy of Blackangel often have private villas on the cliffs overlooking the Serene Expanse that can be mistaken for small keeps themselves.
  • Industry - This settlement is the site of the most dangerous industries of Darkangel such as mining, brickmaking, and smelting.
  • Dirttown - This village is a lower-class residential area holding migrant farmhands, those who work in the dangerous trades in Industry, as well as an underworld of darker trades.
  • Garden Grove - This is the site of the famous farmer's market that trades in goods throughout the south western edge of the Plaguelands.
  • Jorba Lynde - The lizardfolk of the plaguelands were the first settlers even before the Verdant Empire. This adobe village built right into the side of the mountains at a spring is home to lizardfolk who live just as their ancestors did in an earlier age before centuries of domination.
  • Newport - The city of Blackangel has grown so large that a secondary port has been built to the south just outside the walls of the city.
