THE FREE STATE OF ONNWAL
- Population: the penisula is inhabited by only about 25,000 people, 4000 of which live in the fortified capital Scant, and 2000 of which are dwarves in the Headland Hills. There are 20 or so petty barons and clan chiefs who attempt to protect the farming population and who elect one of their number as spokesman, who takes the archaic title Szek, but who is usually referred to as the Viscount.
- Status: most of the economy is dependent on agriculture and fishing, since food supplies are in great demand in Irongate. The dwarves of the headlands also do some mining. Over the last century the state has been subject to repeated raids by pirates and sea-born humanoid raids from the Pomarj. As a result, the countryside is plagued by bands of bandits and goblins and each fortified village and castle is often extremely isolated.
- Locations of Note: Some of the more interesting places of note in Onnwal include: the capital and principal seaport of Scant; the Freehold of Baron Lormak, an independent-minded chieftain of the north coast; the ruins of Smirkenburg; The Moot of Clayfen, the capital of the tumultuous Greenthorn hillmen, and the hall of Chief Dormond, the head of the local dwarves.
