+Hobgoblins were created by selective breeding by ancient (probably elven) sorcerers out of common goblin stock.  Since they were constantly told by their creators how much better they were than other goblinoids, the hobgoblins got a collective racial swell head.  At the same time, they became insecure when folks like dwarves and catters just called them goblins.  As a result, all hobgoblins use the word Hobgoblin as a sort of first name.  So he' not "Dan", he's " Hobgoblin Dan".
