The middle son of the late Stanton Elliot, Fenton had a promising legal career ahead of him when he got drunk and killed two children. He was sentenced and served five years in prison. He was subsequently disowned by his father, disbarred, and ignored by his brother Blair.

Inheriting nothing at the death of his father, Fenton was nearly destitute until his uncle Stephen gave him a well- paying if laborious job managing a meat packing plant.
