The Great Depression
After a fall in stock prices that began around September 4, 1929 (known as Black Tuesday), Gotham entered a period of severe economic collapse. The Great Depression had devastating effects on both the rich and poor. Personal income, tax revenue, profits and prices dropped. Unemployment in Gotham rose as high as 35% because of its dependence on heavy industry. Construction was virtually halted.
