Languages of Kyor

Characters may chose to learn any of the standard languages as they wish. However, learning a language from the exotic language table requires GM's permission.

Standard Languages

The standard languages are those that belong to the three heritages.

  • Common
  • Dwarvish
  • Elvish

Exotic Languages

Player characters may only learn to speak these more exotic languages with the GM's approval

  • Abyssal
  • Celestial
  • Draconic
  • Druidic
  • Deep Speech
  • Infernal
  • Primordial
    • Aquan - A dialect of Primordial related to water creatures
    • Auran - A dialect of Primordial related to air creatures such as Aarakocra
    • Ignan - A dialect of Primordial related to fire creatures
    • Terran - A dialect of Primordial related to earth creatures
  • Sylvan
  • Thieves' Cant
  • Undercommon

Unused Languages

The following standard PHB languages are not spoken in Kyor.

  • Giant - All giants are relatives of the dwarves and speak a dialect of Dwarven that sounds a bit halting and slow.
  • Gnoll - Animal-hybrid humanoids who have taken the curse such as gnolls and werecreatures speak Sylvan or the tongue of their original heritage.
  • Gnomish - Gnomes are also in the same heritage of the dwarves and speak dwarven, albeit with a dialect that includes a lot of specific jargon and acronyms that might be inscrutable to those outside of the Dwarven guilds.
  • Goblin - Monstrous humanoids are invariably otherworldly forces made flesh, and so speak Abyssal, Celestial, Infernal, Primordial, or Sylvan.
  • Halfling - All Fellows speak the common tongue of humanity.
  • Orcish - All green elves speak the elvish tongue.
