Worm's Ferry

Description

Only the most desperate cross the river to the South of Deadmanstown to search for artifacts and food. This rat-infested village of hovels to the North only survives because of treasure-hunters the desperate who hope to make it big by traveling to the ruins of Deadmanstown to find Atlantean artifacts to sell in the markets of Jorviksburg and Kingston.

The “cursed ferry” as it is called is pushed by one brave boy just after sunrise, and then back again an hour before the sun falls once again. The Earl's Men commanded by Angus McNasty, Reeve of Worm's Ferry on the West shore help collect the tolls and dole out justice if any shenanigans should transpire.

To the West of Worm's Ferry is bandit country, made up of a group of gangs led by a self-styled Irish bandit king named Dill. This fellow has managed to create a small settlement in these wilds as a base of operations to lord over settlers looking to escape the king's yoke, but still be protected from the wilds. This settlement is colloquially known as Dill's Burg.

A relatively wide and strong creek known as the Longcrook Creek empties out into the King Godwin River just North of the settlement. The Golden Trousers Creek empties into the King Godwin River a little over four miles South.

Recent History

Angus McNasty led a group of the Earl's men to liberate the village from bandits. They recaptured the manor house on January 9, 1130 and rechristened the manor house Stately Angus Manor in honor of Angus, the village's new reeve. Angus's housecarls have been busy establishing businesses and dwellings in the village in Spring-Summer 1130, and Angus recruited 11 new farm families in June 1130 to bolster the village.

The Old Families (each of which has 1 hide of land under cultivation or grazing)

  • Cooper and his son Cooperson. His daughter Alice has left the village. It's rumored by some that she's become a witch, but others that she has begun a singing career.
  • Porkins and his two nephews, the younger, Chester Porkins, has made several expeditions as laborer to Angus to Deadmans's Town. Porkins is supplier of Mighty Haggis (and other meat products) to the Manor.
  • Handsome Steve, Esther the Godly and twenty-one Stevelings perform a variety of other odd jobs including providing a safe storehouse for provisions in their outbuilding
  • Worm the ancient ferryman, his second wife Mary (nee Non-Gorilla) and their eight youngish children - at least three of which bear an uncanny resemblance to Handsome Steve.
    • Little Timmy - Worm's oldest child by his first wife - was killed in the fight against “Brother Riley” and his blasphemous monks in January of 1130
  • Several farm homes that tend the fields and livestock within a half mile radius are located in various directions a few hundred yards from the square of the settlement. The farmers' family names are:
    • Alistair - To the Southeast, right along the Godwin River with some Irish blood and short temper
    • Beverly - Northwest by the beaver dams in the stream, these farmers have a quality harvest and often offer their surplus as trade. The oldest daughter named Isolde is courting Tariq.
    • Miller - A small mill along the creek to the North is run by the greedy Miller and his family of six marriage-age daughters.
    • Robin - This smaller family of herding farmers to the Southwest are all accomplished hunters - the youngest boy Robinson is the best of the bunch
    • Wolfgang - This family to the South has built a serviceable oven to get into the baking business but they are just terrible at it

The Reeve's Men (i.e., PCs)

  • A trading post, The Dragon's Codpiece, run by Tariq currently 2 Hides worked by 4 tenant farmers, and the trading station with 2 employees and an inn named The Wayfairer's Rest with 7 employees.
  • The Manor House, inhabited by Reeve Angus and a group of seven housecarls, seconded from the Earl, Matron Jeffery works as the house maid since the ruin of her family and farm, and Young Penda is Wulfric's groom/page.
  • A church (on a small mead hall plan, built on the site of the burned out “monastery-cottage” of “Brother” Riley.) with 2 attached clergy (Father Siegfried, and the templar Sean).
  • A larger timber church is under construction. When it is complete, the mead hall church will be converted into a town hospital run by Dr. Edgar.
  • Johnny Venice lives in his own small compound called Casa De Venezia with his new assistant Prostitutta. It consists of a townhouse, barn, storage building and lodge.
  • Welshie lives his own townhouse. In August, his Welshie's Wardogs business will open with 2 employees.
  • Neil the Druid, who is making the deserted Jeffery Farm into a Hemp Farm and Rope Shop with 4 employees.
  • Taffy's Dive Bar complex with 8 regular employees and 2 armed retainers, offers food, drinks, lodging, prostitution and gambling.
  • Raoul has built a laboratory, two cabins and two primitive huts that house his scribe/retainers. A tower house will serve as the home of the new arcane forge he hopes to create soon.
  • Skule Runar the Lege, a Norwegian herbalist and rune master, has moved into town intending to set up a herbalism and brewing business with 4 employees..
  • Lady Rousel Osouf, a Norman knight in the service of the Earl. Has recently joined the Housecarls in the manor, in Johnny Venice's old room.
  • Duda has built a cabin and fortified position for his mercenary band Duda's Dudes.

New Families

  • Raymond O'Nets–Norman fisherman settled near Worm's Ferry in April 1130. He built a hut and has a boat. He always has tales of some of the wild and terrifying monsters he has glimpsed beneath his fishing boat as he navigates the Great King Godwin river.

Militia: 15 militia (1 per household– 5 killed in November will replenish Jan 1)–treat as Class D Nessex militia. Plus Tariq and one of his underlings and Neil and arguably Sean to serve for the church land, and Skule or a retainer.

Housecarls: Angus plus his 11 from the Earl (Wulfric, Duda, Taffy, Neil, Raoul, Johnny, Welshie, Skule, Rousel De Osouf, Hamish and Carthac. They are joined by several retainers–Young Penda the Groom, Wise Merfyn, 3 soldiers–(Berwyn, Leofric, Godric), Bumpo, Sister Mildred, Dudda O'Fleck. The Reeve and Duda each have 3 mercenary soldiers as retainers as well

Nearby Points of Interest

There are several smaller settlements and interesting sites on the far Northern frontier that have been identified in scouting missions.

  • Lesserton - This humble village of fourteen families in a bend of Longcrook Creek are led by a young man who calls himself Ricketts. They raise goats and grain, and live in fear of harassing bandits and the sorceress across the creek. There is a suspicious paucity of adult men left in the village, as Ricketts himself just passed his eighteenth winter.
  • Shepherd's Hollow - Surrounded to the North and East by some hills is a herding community dedicated to raising large herds of sheep. In the Spring and Summer flocks of these animals can often be seen roaming from the Dillswood to the river. In colder months, the shepherds and their animals winter together in barns.
  • Frogtown - While larger than Lesserton, and less populous than Shepherd's Hollow, Frogtown is a small settlement in the territories that belong to Worm's Ferry about a half-mile from the trail to Jorvikburg.
  • Shepherd's Gallows - Along the base of the hills to the East of Shepherd's hollow is a lonely platform and gallows. Its history or purpose is unknown at this point. It serves as a handy landmark and meeting place, despite having the subtle funk of evil.
  • The Irish Treehouse - A small ruined and crumbling wooden defensive works used by bandits as a base of operations for hijackings along the route from Jorviburg to Worm's Ferry.
